Our Full Review
Sephora didn't just change how people buy beauty products — it changed how people discover them. Before Sephora popularized the open-sell format, buying prestige beauty meant approaching a department store counter staffed by brand-specific salespeople. Sephora's innovation was letting customers touch, try, and compare products across brands without sales pressure.
The product selection is genuinely unrivaled. Over 300 brands spanning skincare, makeup, haircare, and fragrance, from drugstore-elevated (The Ordinary) to ultra-prestige (La Mer). The curation is thoughtful — the "Clean at Sephora" designation, the "Sephora Favorites" sample kits, and the curated collections help navigate what could otherwise be analysis paralysis.
Beauty Insider remains the gold standard for loyalty programs in retail. The three-tier system (Insider, VIB, Rouge) offers escalating perks including birthday gifts, early access to sales, and Rouge members get free custom makeovers. The biannual 15-20% off sales events are the best times to stock up on full-price prestige products.
The online experience is strong. Product pages include thousands of user reviews filterable by skin type, age, and skin tone. The Virtual Artist AR tool for try-on has improved substantially and is genuinely useful for lip and eye products. Same-day delivery and Buy Online Pick Up In Store options add convenience.
The main frustration is pricing. Sephora sells at full retail, and outside the biannual sales events, there's no path to a discount. The reward points earn samples and experiences, not meaningful dollar savings. It's also worth noting that the same products are often available at Ulta for similar prices but with better coupon stacking opportunities.
