Our Full Review
MAC (Make-up Art Cosmetics) occupies a unique lane in beauty: it's the brand that professional makeup artists actually use backstage at Fashion Week, but it's also available at your local mall. That dual identity — professional performance, consumer accessibility — is what makes MAC enduringly relevant.
The color range is MAC's greatest strength. Over 200 permanent lipstick shades in multiple finish families (Matte, Satin, Cremesheen, Amplified, Lustre) means there is a perfect nude, red, berry, and everything in between for every skin tone. Ruby Woo, a retro matte blue-red, has been a top seller for decades because the formula and shade are genuinely perfect. The eye shadow selection in both singles and palettes offers pigmentation that most brands can't match.
MAC's foundations deserve specific praise. Studio Fix Fluid offers buildable full coverage in 60+ shades with accurate undertone matching (NW for warm, NC for cool, N for neutral). Face and Body is a lighter, water-resistant formula that photographers and videographers swear by. These formulas perform under studio lights, sweat, and 12-hour wear — because they were designed to.
The MAC Pro program gives working artists access to wholesale pricing and exclusive products, cementing the brand's professional credentials. The Back to MAC recycling program — return six empty containers for a free lipstick — was ahead of its time and remains one of the industry's better sustainability initiatives.
The brand's challenge is modernization. Some product categories (notably skincare-makeup hybrids and "clean beauty" alternatives) feel underdeveloped. Packaging looks dated compared to newer brands. And while the counter experience can be wonderful with a knowledgeable artist, it can also feel pushy. MAC's core products remain exceptional, but the brand needs to communicate its relevance to younger consumers who may associate it with their mother's makeup bag.
