Ray-Ban is to eyewear what Levi's is to denim: the foundational brand that defined the category. The Aviator (1937) was literally designed for US Air Force pilots. The Wayfarer (1952) became the most-sold sunglass design in history. The Clubmaster channels 1950s intellectual cool. These aren't just sunglasses — they're cultural artifacts that happen to protect your eyes.
The optical quality justifies the price premium over fashion sunglasses. Ray-Ban lenses — whether the classic G-15 green, B-15 brown, or polarized variants — provide genuine UV400 protection with optical clarity that you can feel. Put on a pair of cheap sunglasses, then swap to Ray-Bans, and the difference in visual clarity is immediately apparent. The crystal lenses in classic styles are made of actual glass, which offers superior optics to polycarbonate at the cost of slightly more weight.
Ray-Ban Meta (the collaboration with Meta/Facebook) deserves attention as the first truly usable smart glasses. They look like normal Wayfarers, capture decent photos and video, play music through open-ear speakers, and now include an AI assistant. They're the first smart glasses that don't look like a tech product trying too hard.
